10 Ways to Look After Your Mental Health

January 26, 2022

Mental Health

It can be a challenge any time to stay mentally healthy, let alone two years into a pandemic.

Whether you are trying to keep your mind at peace or work through a challenge, there are ways to look after your mental health.

Check out these 10 ways:

  1. Talk about your feelings

Be honest about your emotions and what you are feeling is important to your mental health. Keeping everything bottled will lead to additional stress on your mind and body.

  1. Stay active

Working out helps with your overall health and your own sense of well-being. Many studies show that people who exercise regularly benefit with a positive boost in mood and lower rates of depression because it increases endorphins.

  1. Learn how to deal with stress

Everyone deals with stress differently, so you can figure out what works for you. Stress reducers can include:

  • Taking a walk
  • Meditating
  • Journaling
  • Play with a pet
  • Listen to a podcast
  • Read a book

  1. Surround yourself with good people

Negative energy can affect your mood. Creating a space with positivity can go a long way for your own mental health. Additionally, people with strong family or other social connections are generally healthier because they have a strong support system.

  1. Practice mindfulness

Relaxation exercises can help quiet your mind. Here are some One-Minute Stress Strategies you can try out.

  1. Set realistic goals

Sometimes adding too much to your plate can create added mental stress. Setting realistic goals for what you are trying to achieve will help.

Check out our NY Resolutions blog that details tips for how to best achieve your goals.

  1. Try something new

Routines can be really helpful when we are trying to achieve our goals, but sometimes breaking up the monotony of our every day lives can help our mental health as well. Challenging ourselves to do something we always wanted to try can help us focus.

  1. Eat well

Eating unhealthy foods can leave us feeling sluggish. Eating nutritious meals can give us the vitamins and minerals to make our bodies feel their best. Drinking plenty of water will also keep you hydrated.

  1. Do something you love

What do you absolutely love to do? Bringing joy into your life can lift your spirits.

  1. Ask for help

According to Mental Health America, more than half of adults with a mental illness receive no treatment. Do not be afraid to ask for help.
